Observation Narrative
The habitat of this plot is a high elevation seep supporting wetland forest vegetation with distinct northern affinities. State rare plant species here include Alnus incana ssp. rugosa and Rhamnus alnifolia.
Plot location: Shenandoah National Park. Along a small stream headwaters in the Limberlost, ca. 0.3 mi. SSE of the Limberlost parking area off Skyline Drive (at W. end of the Old Rag Fire Road).
Very deep organic matter and organic rich muck. Underlying soil is unconsolidated gravel, sand and silt.
Mapped as colluvial land, extremely stony (1975 soil survey); sample collected.
